AJC's July Benefit brings fun and funding to ERRI - by Laura W. Baier

Rendez-Vous Farm was alive with the sound of pounding hooves on July 22. The benefit joust put together by the Amateur Jousting Club of Maryland, Inc. was a huge success according to members of both ERRI and the AJC.

Both polished jousters and riders new to the sport participated in the day-long event. An AJC clinic taught riders how to hold and maneuver the lance in order to catch small rings hanging from tall arches.

Several ERRI horses and board members participated in the event, including Mosquito shown in the photo below, that brought over $1500 to the rescue.

All clinic and class entry fees went to ERRI. ERRI board members who rode in the joust gathered sponsorships. Some sponsors donated a pre-determined amount of money per "ring caught" while others donated one sum for the entire ride. ERRI also sold used tack and ERRI clothing and accessories to raise further money. Last year's joust brought roughly $1,100 to the rescue.

Due to the great success of the benefit joust, AJC and ERRI members have decided to hold the 2002 joust in the spring. The event will be spread out over two weekends allowing more clinic time for riders interested in learning how to joust. One weekend will be devoted to a clinic with the following weekend devoted to the joust itself. Details will follow in future newsletters.

ERRI and the AJC hope that by spreading out the event and allowing more time for joust education, more riders will be attracted to giving the sport a try. The groups also hope that outside equestrian groups such as local pony and 4-H clubs will participate.

ERRI wishes to thank those who participated and came to watch the joust, as well as the AJC for organizing and running the tremendously successful event.
