In the middle of February, Debbie Frank and I were going over a list of the ERRI horses. When Debbie said the name, “Sandaar”, I couldn’t believe my ears. Could it be the same wonderful Arab gelding I had once owned? We were so excited that Sandaar, now 25, had been given to Erri and was being well taken care of right at Rendezvous Farm.

I found Sandaar from an ad in the BALTIMORE SUN in 1984. We went to visit him and to try him out for my son, John, who was 13 years old at the time. He had grown too large for the pony he was taking riding lessons on, and my husband also wanted to learn how to ride. Sandaar was a dream come true. He was a quiet, kind Arab who had been on many trail rides. He had been broken western, but could be ridden english too. We all loved Sandaar from the first moment he stepped on to our trailer.

John spent a lot of his time having lessons and trying to learn how to jump. Sandaar went along with the program, however, jumping was not really what he liked doing. It seemed to me that he would roll his eyes, sigh and usually go over the jumps. At times he would say no, and it would take some persuading to get him to jump anything over 1 foot! The picture is Don on Sandaar doing his first dressage test. Sandaar was embarrassed about the hat!

After two years, John outgrew Sandaar and needed a bigger steed. We came to the horrible realization that we had to sell him in order to buy another. He was one of those wonderful guys that would have been great to hold on to, but at the time we were already boarding my own Arab gelding, and boarding three was out of the question.

We were very fortunate to find a wonderful buyer for Sandaar who wanted a nice quiet trail horse and who loved him as much as we did. We have learned that Sandaar eventually ended up being shown extensively by a young 4-H member. He won some ribbons jumping and was a true star.

Don and I visited him recently, It was wonderful seeing him again. I’d like to think he remembered us, especially since we took him his favorite food, carrots. I’m hoping perhaps Sandaar will take an old friend for a short trail ride this summer…. I promise no jumping!
