Happy Hot Summer! The heat and lack of rain has affected us all but at ERRI Headquarters, it seems especially hard. We watched with frustration as the grass dried up in the pastures and knew there wasn’t a thing we could do about it. To compensate, we’ve had to begin using our winter supply of round bales to make sure the horses have enough to eat.

The heat even pushed us way behind schedule on our rehabilitation schooling since it would be unfair to ask much of a recovering rescue in the 100+ degree temperatures we’ve been experiencing. As a result, we are unable to take on any new projects until we catch up.

And the worst part about that is that we’re not alone. The state-wide heat and drought emergency has put all the area equine rescues in the same position. I am receiving an average of one call every day that I have to turn away. Typically, the area rescues cooperate with each other by providing referrals and services, but right now we’re all in the same boat, so to speak. Days End rescue in Lisbon and Lost and Found rescue in Pennsylvania are turning down just as many requests as we are.

All any of us can do right now is put requesters on a waiting list, or try to find a foster home for needy equines through our network. So please consider this an urgent plea for more foster farms. If you have room in your barn for even one rescue, we’d love to hear from you And remember that everything you invest is tax deductible.

I must say that through it all, our hard-core volunteers have been fantastic. To the singles group from Washington, to our steady locals, and to our barn family, we can’t thank you enough.

Ok, so we all have problems. But ERRI has its share of blessings too. For example, the Thoroughbred Charities of America, Ltd. and Baker King, Inc. awarded us grant money this summer and we so appreciate their generosity.

One last thing. Please set aside Saturday, November 6th for our annual hoedown at the Hereford Fire Hall. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, but more importantly, its a blast. As always, we’ll have great food, great music, dancing, door prizes, a silent auction with bargains galore, and much, much more. All ages are welcome, so bring your family on over to have some fun with ours. Y'all come!
