Recognition dinner honors donors; surprises hard-working volunteers

By Laura W. Baier

Every year, the ERRI Board of Directors looks forward to thanking all of ERRI's wonderful volunteers and generous donors for their effort and hard work on behalf of its rescues. This year, ERRI held its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the An Poitin Stil in Timonium on Sunday, March 17th. Thirty-six ERRI supporters and family members attended the event that highlighted volunteer efforts in the areas of fundraising, special events, and plain hard work. ERRI also took the opportunity to recognize the continued support of business and personal donors, many of whom were mentioned in ERRI's "Ten Year Tribute" in the December 2004 newsletter. This year, two ERRI volunteers received high honors as ERRI Volunteer of the Year 2005. Sue Adler was honored for her 7-year commitment to ERRI and her fantastic fundraising ability. Adler, who has been ERRI Advisory Board Vice-President for the past 3 years, has raised the most money 3 years running through rider sponsorships at ERRI's annual benefit joust. She also rounded up the most business sponsorships for ERRI's Shawan Downs in-field demo fundraiser in Sept. 2004. Upon receiving the honor, Adler said, "I don't know what to say. I'm shocked." The second honoree was Brett Baier. Baier, who like many of ERRI's helpers, did not come to ERRI for his love of horses, but indirectly became involved through his wife, Advisory Board President Laura W. Baier. Baier was instrumental in completing ERRI's enormous fencing project in 2003-2004 and continues to help with farm upkeep and maintenance during his spare time. A foreign language teacher at Hereford High School, Baier's primary interest is wrestling and football, but he is always ready to lend a hand at ERRI when the need arises. ERRI also gave an award to photographer Mary Adams for her fabulous work photographing ERRI rescues over the past year. A gifted photography artist, Adams donated her talents to ERRI for many special events last year, including the July joust and the Shawan Downs event where she snapped shots of ERRI's guest demonstrators on the steeplechase infield last September. Others given special recognition were Susan Eckert for her work with organizing and updating ERRI's budget and Virginia Crews for her continued dedication to improving ERRI's equine's safety and comfort through generous donations. All of ERRI's volunteers, board members and donors received certificates of recognition and thanks for their selfless work.
