5th Annual AJC Benefit Joust a resounding success

By Laura W. Baier

Ask any of the 70 plus spectators, riders, or ERRI volunteers at the joust on July 24th if they had fun and you will hear a decided "YES!"

This year's benefit not only brought more of the community out to Rendezvous Farm to see what the jousting fuss was all about, but it also generated more money for the rescue than any previous effort.

ERRI Advisory Board Vice President Kim Gordon won the novice class, which is the largest class at the benefit joust. She was a little concerned in the days preceding the joust about whether she would be able to steer her mount Pandora, who had never participated before.

"Will they let me catch the rings in my teeth?" she asked one afternoon.

After her win, fellow riders teased Kim about her concerns and decided that Pandora was just made to joust.

Of course, jousting is not all the horse, Kim did a fabulous job jousting, catching 8 of 9 rings.

ERRI volunteers and board members also did a fabulous job rounding up sponsors for the benefit. Sponsors donated money to riders jousting that day to benefit the rescue. After all was said and done, over $1,600 was made on just rider sponsorships.

The rescue also raised money that day with a face-painting booth, snow cones, dress-up photos with horses, and parking donations. All-in-all, the benefit netted over $2,200.

ERRI would like to send a special thank you to the Amateur Jousting Club of Maryland for organizing and running the joust and to Nihilator Catering for supplying food.

ERRI also thanks its board members for finding so many wonderful sponsors and supporters. The joust would not have been possible without the hard work of ERRI volunteers and board members who helped set up and prepare the farm for the event.

We all look forward to many more fun jousts in the future!
