Equestrian demos show versatility, raise money for rescues

by Laura W. Baier

The Shawan Downs Legacy Chase on Sept. 25th will mark the culmination of over 10 months of planning and preparation for ERRI. For the second year, ERRI has orchestrated equestrian demonstrations to entertain and educate the crowd on the in-field between races.

This year, racing fans will see exciting demonstrations from the Maryland Polo Club, The Plantation Walking Horses of Maryland, and the 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program of Carroll County.

The event, for which all participating clubs donate their time to perform, was designed to show race goers the versatility of the horse while entertaining them at the same time. Business sponsors including Becton Dickinson, Compass Technology Associates Inc., Hofmann Ltd., Interior Plant Services, Italian Gardens Restaurant, Linnan & Brooks DDS, The Peppermill Restaurant, Pontifex Inc., and La Scala Ristorante Italiano helped raise money for ERRI by sponsoring the various demonstrations.

ERRI is also raising money through the sale of general parking tickets to the Legacy Chase event. Thanks to the generosity of Shawan Downs, ERRI will receive 50% of the profit from any tickets ERRI volunteers sell. The tickets sell for $25. The general parking area is convenient to the course and a trolley service is available for transportation from the parking area if necessary.

Gates open on Sept. 25th at 10 a.m. with the first race at 1 p.m. In addition to steeplechase racing, an old-fashioned country fair area and retail tents will also be featured.

Don't forget to visit our volunteers at our information tent in the Legacy Fair.
