Project winds down but help and volunteers still needed

by Linda Veblen, Ph.D.

ERRI has made significant progress on the National Fish and Wildlife Piney Creek Conservation Grant. By the end of December, all of the fencing will have been installed. Currently all the posts are in the ground and the wire is about 3/4 finished.

There are several new fence lines that separate the gelding and mare fields into several pastures. This allows for pasture rotation that will not only increase the quality of the pastures but also help filter sediment run-off into Piney Creek.

We have had some very dedicated volunteers stringing coated wire on the fence posts. The fencing looks great and has already proven to be horse-safe. And so far, the horses have adjusted well to the fencing, although they have been hilarious throughout the installation process.

The mares, of course, took it all in stride. The geldings, on the other hand, were extremely curious. Dash, ERRI's Chincoteague pony rescue, was completely enamored of the spinning jenny spool used to unwind the wire. He would stick his nose right in the middle of it as it was spinning! He also enjoyed pulling supplies off the trucks!

Left to do in the project is the manure storage facility by the barn. La Farge, North America, Inc. has graciously donated 180 tons of fill, 34 tons of stone for the base, and concrete blocks for the walls of the manure storage facility. We are looking for contributors to haul the materials from the La Farge-Texas, Maryland plant to Rendezvous Farm.

We are also still in need of a contribution of 18 cubic yards of concrete or approximately $1,100 cash for the concrete. If you would like to help please contact Linda Veblen at 410-472-9447.

Our volunteers have been wonderful! We have now logged approximately 524 hours of volunteer labor for the months of October and November. Way to go guys!

We thank The Mill of Bel Air, H. Stolzfuss, Keystone Fencing, Inc., La Farge North America, Inc., Greenland Development Services, LLC, R. Losey and the many ERRI volunteers for their generous contributions.
