Booths, demos and hard work help ERRI spread message

by Laura W. Baier

Shawan Downs' 3rd Annual Legacy Chase day of racing was the stage for ERRI's large-scale fall benefit again this year. Held on Sept. 27th, the day was a huge success for ERRI, bringing in over $2,000 for our rescues and giving ERRI exposure to the more than 10,000 people the event drew.

Legg Mason Funds was ERRI's corporate sponsor, for the second consecutive year, hosting a tent that included an ERRI raffle, a framed Limited Edition Seabiscuit Print by Frank B. Hoffman (which ERRI is selling), and signed copies of Baltimore Sun writer John Eisenberg's book Native Dancer: The Grey Ghost.

In addition to the displays in the Legg Mason Tent, ERRI also had an information tent on Founder's Hill where passers-by could find out more
about ERRI's mission and goals.

ERRI also brought together a diverse array of equestrian disciplines to give demonstrations on the infield in between races that day.

Riders from the 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program of Carroll County, members of the My Lady's Manor Driving Club, the Maryland Polo Club and riders from The Retreat gave onlookers riding demonstrations in carriage driving, polo and dressage.

ERRI was also lucky to give some spectators a look at two of Maryland's 2003 Special Olympic World Games Ireland Team USA medal winners.

ERRI thanks Compass Technology Assoc. Inc., Becton Dickinson, Aletha's Fine Art Gallery & Open Studio, Curves of Jacksonville, N.M. Phillips Co. Inc., and Pontifex, Inc. for sponsoring the between race demonstrations.

Our Boards would like to thank Tal Daley for donating 50 copies of Native Dancer: The Grey Ghost and arranging for the author to sign during races that day.

ERRI sincerely thanks John Eisenberg for his participation and his gripping rendition of the Grey Ghosts' tale in his book. The benefit would not have been a success without Legg Mason Funds and Shawan Downs who supported ERRI every step of the way.

The Maryland Polo Club and Trevor Wells, My Lady's Manor Driving Club, and Mary Shunk and her corps of volunteers are thanked for their cooperation and good cheer. The demos were wonderful because of all their hard work.

ERRI thanks all of our board members and volunteers who spent their Saturday at the Downs manning our tents. ERRI is excited about the success of this year's benefit and is currently working with Shawan Downs to improve the benefit for next year.
