Recognition dinner gives volunteers a night out

By Laura W. Baier

The An Poitin Stil provided the atmosphere and ERRI Volunteers provided the fun at ERRI's Annual Recognition Dinner held Monday, March 24. The Stil helped cut the cost of the dinner to volunteers by donating use of their new "Tack Room" banquet room that night. They also put together a reduced-price menu and waived sales tax, as ERRI is a non-profit organization.

Volunteers dined on Shepherd's Pie, Stuffed Chicken, or Corned Beef and Cabbage while enjoying the beautiful room which features horse murals on the walls and framed horse photos from Maryland's past.

The evening began with an awards ceremony where members of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Consulting Board, volunteers, and donors were recognized for their hard work and generosity toward ERRI. The ceremony was capped off with two very special awards.

The first went to Advisory Board member Linda Veblen for her extensive work with the $25,000 grant from the Chesapeake Bay Small Watershed Grants Program of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. This grant will help ERRI control soil erosion into the Piney Creek watershed, which runs at the bottom of the headquarters' property. It will also help us restore and improve our pasture management program.

The second award went to ERRI's first-ever Volunteer of the Year. Judy Hofmann, recording secretary for ERRI's Advisory Board, received the honor for 2003. Hofmann spends several days a week mucking stalls for ERRI. She is dependable rain or shine and has been heard describing the work as "therapeutic." Hofmann also adopted an ERRI rescue over a year ago. In addition to her work on ERRI's Advisory Board, she took on the responsibility of being ERRI's Volunteer Coordinator this year, a job she hopes to expand and solidify.

ERRI wishes to thank Advisory Board member Sue Heisler Eckert for her help coordinating the dinner. ERRI also wants to thank all those who attended and extend thanks to those who could not attend, but whose efforts were equally recognized that night.

We look forward to continuing to recognize the wonderful achievements of our supporters.
